Air pollution is a serious problem that affects us all. It is caused by the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere, and it can have both short- and long-term effects on our health. The most common pollutants include ground-level ozone, particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. These pollutants can be emitted directly into the air by factories, cars, and other sources, or they can be formed when other pollutants react in the atmosphere.

The effects of air pollution can vary depending on what type of pollutant you are exposed to, how much you are exposed to, and for how long you are exposed. Short-term effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation ( জ্বালা ); coughing; wheezing ( ঘ্রাণ ); difficulty breathing; and increased risk of respiratory infections. Long-term effects include damage to lung tissue; accelerated aging of the lungs; bronchitis; emphysema; heart disease; and cancer.

There are some simple steps that we can all take to reduce our contribution to air pollution. For example, we can choose to walk or bike instead of drive whenever possible, carpool when we do have to drive, and make sure our cars are properly maintained so that they run as efficiently as possible.

We can also refrain from burning wood or trash in our fireplaces or outdoors. By working together to reduce our emissions of air pollutants, we can improve the quality of the air we breathe and protect our health.
